Network
Launched
In March1999
the EU-India Innovation project was launched with a conference
and workshops that were held in Delhi and Ludhiana, India. Indian
project partners extended a warm welcome to this new and exciting
initiative funded by the European Union. These events were attended
by delegates of the participating universities and invited entrepreneurs
and was the first opportunity for partners to come together
and get to know of each others interests and begin the
serious work of cross cultural collaborative activities. In
this day of information technology everyone was of the opinion
that the sharing of information between various countries of
Europe and India will be of immense value for improving ongoing
teaching, research and development programmes for the future.
The workshop/seminar
programmes and public symposium on "From Agriculture to Industrial
Society in the Global Information Economy" at the Punjab Agricultural
University (PAU) Ludhiana on 4 and 6 March provided a forum
for extending the university network to entrepreneurs and members
of the public and for disseminating information about the key
activities of the project. The events received extensive coverage
from the media and reporters from various new agencies who attended
various sessions and interviewed some of the delegates. Dr.
G S Kalkat, Vice Chancellor and senior members of the PAU welcomed
the network delegates from Europe and India. Possible
areas and specialisations where collaboration between the PAU
and EU-India Network can be organised were explored.
An open
workshop was held at NISTADS on 9th March 1999 at
which the key activities of the project were disseminated. The
workshop delegates were welcomed by Dr. S Prutti, Acting Director
of NISTADS. Key areas of research were introduced to researchers
from the host institution.
The visiting
network partners also had the opportunity to participate in
a Kisan Mela (an information and technology transfer event for
rural development) run by Punjab Agriculture University in a
remote part of North East Punjab. This event brings together
regional farmers, local communities and researchers into a public
forum at the PAU research Centre to hear from researchers and
practitioners about new developments in training, innovation,
agro-industry and bio-technology, and to buy seeds for the new
season. About 50 academics attended this event in addition to
about 1000 local participants in the outreach programme and
the event gave the delegates the opportunity to see University-Community
interaction at first hand.
