4TH EUROPEAN SUMMER SCHOOL

IN HUMAN CENTRED SYSTEMS

UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON,

UNITED KINGDOM

13-18 September 1997

Introduction

HCS places human needs, interests and purposes at the centre of shaping technology, systems and social worlds. This tradition emphasises multidisciplinary approaches for the design and use of information, communication or media systems. The purpose of the summer school is to study current issues of social innovation and community networking, human computer relations and multimedia and communication. The summer school will consist of two day conference on Cultural Renaissance and Cities of Innovation, followed by a three day Intensive Summer School Programme in Human centred Systems.

Two Day Conference (13-14 September 1997)
Cultural Renaissance and Cities of Innovation At the dawn of the new Millenium, we are witnessing an unprecedented convergence of technological inovations, institutional forms, economic and social organisations. The presence of information and communications media have become so substantial in the new information society, that it is beginnig to underpin all human activities and human relations. Social and economic forms of working and living including social concepts of service, identity, and society are being redefined and represented in the image of the global paradigm. The conference will discuss these conflicts and dilemmas, and how we may shape technologies and systems which respond to cultural needs, aspirations and interests of people and societies.

Conference Topics

Intensive Summer School Programme (15-18 September 1997)
The summer school will consist of lectures and workshops. Formal lectures will take place during the mornings and workshops will take place during the afternoons. Evening sessions will include a programme of social events, and collaborative reflections.

Workshops

* Future use of the tools and techniques for CSCW
* The effect of these tools and techniques on the quality of work (processes and product)
* Future workshops and a "scenario writing studio".
Keld Bødker, Juergen Friedrich, Pertti Jarvinen, Micke Svedemar

3. Multimedia and Communication
The aim of the workshop is to study dynamic multimedia systems from a semiotic point of view and to study design processes from initial ideas to systems in use. The topics will include presentation and representation, aesthetics, interaction between humans, user models and artificial realities. The workshop will give priority to both experimental and theoretical approaches and to intercultural dimensions.

Cultural Renaissance and Cities of Innovation

Two Day Conference

University of Brighton
13-14 September 1997

Venue: Asa Briggs Hall, Falmer Campus, University of Brighton

Introduction

At the dawn of the millemium, we are witnessing an unprecedented convergence of technological innovations, institutional forms, economic and social organisations. The presence of information and media technologies has become so substantial in the new information society, that it is beginning to underpin all human activities and human relations.Social and economic forms of working and living including social concepts of service, identity, and society are being redefined and represented in the image of the global paradigm.

Technological innovations offer a greater potential for a new cultural and economic renaissance, but also possess the risk of exclusion of people and their aspirations from shaping the information society. New technologies provide opportunities for the creation of new forms of work, human learning and living conditions, but at the same time there are dangers of decontextualising identity and thought, and of closing down human capacities for social innovation and sustainability. Information and media technologies are being employed to transfer and control the flow of information, knowledge, money, goods and services across national boundaries. A great gap is already emerging between the global imahe of information society and the humanistic vision of developing socially useful technologies which deal with wider societal issues of employment, welfare, education, health, education, literacy, hunger and poverty.

The conference will discuss these conflicts and dilemmas, and how we may shape technologies and systems which respond to cultural needs, aspirations and interests of people and societies.
