This is a list of design competitions open to UK students. It is primarily meant for students in new media and related design disciplines at the University of Brightion, but anyone is welcome to use it. BBC Vision Design Competition

The BBC's Vision Design Competition helps talented designers at the start of their careers gain an introduction into the film & television industry. Successful applicants have the opportunity to gain practical experience within their chosen design discipline and are invited to apply for the Vision Design Trainee Scheme. RSA Design Directions Awards   


Two interesting briefs here, one on sustainable tourism and the other on food information systems. Entry date is Nov 20th 2006.  Details from the RSA Design Directions Site.

CHI Student Design Awards 

This scheme, now in its 5th year, is looking for submissions from current students on computer technology to persuade us to to use public transport (or transit, as it seems to be known in the US). Entries by 15th January 2007. Details from http://www.chi2007.org/submit/designcomp.php

Guardian Student Media Awards   

Now in their 29th year, the Guardian Student Media Awards are primarily aimed at student journalists, editors, designers and photographers with excellent prizes that include cash, work experience at the Guardian and Sky News and flights from easyJet. They do include a Student Website category, however. The judges are looking for "Innovative web content that exploits the strength of the medium, and displays a clear identity and understanding of the audience. We want to see ease of use combined with good design."  The 2006 deadline has passed but you should find details of the 2007 competition soon here.

Europrix Top Talent Award 


 
EUROPRIX is the Europe-wide contest, open to European producers and young talents, who develop and/or release marketable multimedia products. It focuses on multimedia, which makes sense and demonstrates a clear added value for specific user communities and contexts of use. The Top Talent Award is annual and and was held for the first time in Salzburg in 1998. Since that - nearly 2000 Products from all over Europe have been entered to the Contest. This is a great competition for new media students, with categories including broadband / Online, Offline/ DVD, mobile content, games platforms, Interactive TV, computer graphics and cross media. Closing date end of June - details at  http://www.europrix.org/europrix/EuroPrix.htm. You'll find other interesting events on the home site of the umbrella organisation, the International Center for New Media.

British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) 


 
Very prestigious award programme from the main industry body for UK interactive media. The student competition involves a (reduced) £25 entry fee, but don't let this put you off if you think your creation deserves attention. This award is open to anyone on a full-time higher education course and will recognise the best use of digital media by a student or team. The work must have been produced as part of the course and the work can be individual or collaborative. The judges will be looking for exciting and innovative creative ideas in interactive design and functionality. Entry date is normally the end of July each year. More details at the BIMA awards site.

   Animex Student Animation Awards

Annual award for student animators as part of the Animex Festical, held on Teeside. More details and inspiring entries from this year at Animex awards site.

  New Designers Exhibition and Awards

Graduating students in all aspects of design, including interactive media design,  can apply to exhibit at this show, held each year in July, and be considered fro a series of awards. A very high profile event. Details at: http://www.newdesigners.com

  Science, Engineering & Technology Student Awards

This scheme is aimed  at final year undergrads in science, enginering and technology, based on project work and a lecturer reference. In the words of the SET web site, "The Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards (SET) are the Oscars of British science and technology education". Entry deadline tends to be July each year.  Details here.

  Design & Art Direction: Global Student Awards

A long-established scheme aimed mainly at students looking for a career in advertising but with some scope for multimedia entries. This is an excellent site to visit even if you aren't going to enter your work: a rummage around the Inspiration section is highly recommended. A wide range of briefs is available in September each year from  D & AD's student awards site.
  Promax Student Competitions 

Promax UK, whose members are concerned with promoting and marketing TV, run some great competitions concerned with television, e.g. designing a service to fill the gaps between broadcast programmes. Excellent prizes. There's also a competition for colleges. The submission date for the 2007 awqard is likely to be July 2007. Details on the Promax UK site.
